Guasha or Gua Sha, and the questions people often ask.

1. What is Gua Sha?

In essence, just as Vietnam has its own practice of traditional skin scraping (Cao Gio), Gua Sha in Traditional Chinese Medicine is also a form of scraping. Later, the royal consorts took it to a new level and turned it into a beauty ritual for the face, with a refined technique.

2. Gua Sha tools

They can be made from buffalo horn, metal or natural stone, or even plastic, but each material brings different additional qualities.

  • Plastic has no distinct mineral qualities, so using it gives only the mechanical effects of the massage technique itself.

  • Metal depends on the material, for example silver, copper,…

  • Buffalo horn is yang in nature and helps dispel cold, which is why in Vietnam we traditionally use buffalo horn for body scraping.

  • As for stone, artisans carve them from many varieties: jade, rose quartz, clear quartz, amethyst,…

3. Why did I choose rose quartz for Gua Sha?

In traditional crystal lore, Rose Quartz is cherished for its gentle, soothing energy that is easy for everyone to enjoy. Whether a person's energy is vibrant or subtle, it brings a comforting presence. Its delicate pink hue is traditionally associated with natural vitality. Using a rose quartz Gua Sha for gentle facial massage stimulates microcirculation, helps ease facial puffiness, and gives the skin a radiant, rosy glow.

4. Why does the stone have natural veining and occasional small pits on the surface?

The rose quartz used for Gua Sha is natural carved stone, not synthetic glass or high-grade jewelry crystal. Transparent crystals are reserved for fine jewelry where they command high prices. This stone is shaped from raw mineral blocks, and natural rose quartz has inherent mineral textures and micro-fissures formed over millennia.

When I source the stones, I pay attention to the following:

  • Does the smoothed edge contour comfortably along the face, or is it a stiff straight line? If it is the latter, I reject it.

  • Are the corners chipped when used on the face? If any are chipped, I reject them.

  • Are there structural cracks that compromise durability? If there are, I reject it, because it could easily break if handled roughly. As with all natural gemstone items, dropping it on hard tile will cause it to chip or break.

Tiny surface indentations are natural mineral characteristics. I personally inspect and filter out pieces with significant surface flaws.
